Steve Ahlenius, president and chief executive of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, was honored this month by the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives, an association of more than 1,500 chamber professionals throughout the state.
Ahlenius received the 2015 Martin Hurley Award — the group’s top honor.
Ahlenius has led the McAllen chamber for 17 years, a time that has seen South Texas’ economy explode with growth following the ratification of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The award committee dubbed Ahlenius as “truly a visionary and trailblazer” by leading several business programs and initiatives that has helped bring new business opportunities to the McAllen area.
The award committee in a news release noted several McAllen chamber programs, including the Idea Lab, New Idea Innovation Grants, Mini Maker Faire, The McAllen Creative Incubator, TechSpace, The Inventors and Entrepreneurs Network and Crowd Funding Catapult.
